Got your admission letter from an Italian university? The Italy study visa from India is the last gate before your flight. Most refusals don’t come from weak profiles. They come from the wrong consulate, missing attestations, or a bank statement that doesn’t meet the rules. This guide walks you through the 2027 process step by step, using the latest official VFS Global and Italian Embassy checklists.

iWhat is the Italy study visa?

Indian students joining a full degree in Italy (Bachelor’s, Master’s, single-cycle or PhD) need a national long-stay visa, Type D, for study. It lets you enter Italy, and within 8 working days of arrival you apply for the permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) at the post office. Courses shorter than 90 days use a Schengen Type C visa instead. (Applying from Pakistan? Read our Pakistan study visa guide.)

Before you can apply for the visa you need two things in hand: an admission (or conditional admission) from the university and a completed Universitaly pre-enrolment. If you’re still choosing where to apply, start with our list of Italian public universities and universities with no application fee.

1Which Italian consulate covers your state?

This is where many Indian applicants go wrong. You must apply to the mission that covers the state where you have lived for at least the last 6 months, not where your passport was issued. Applications are submitted through VFS Global.

3Document checklist for 2027

Based on the latest VFS Global study visa checklist (2026 edition, Bengaluru). Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata follow the same national rules, but always download your own consulate’s checklist before your appointment.

4How much money do you need to show?

€10,179.85PER ACADEMIC YEAR · 2026 CHECKLIST
  • About ₹10.9 lakh at the rate VFS uses for visa fees (around ₹107 per euro). Check the rate on the day you apply.
  • Older 2025 checklists listed €6,947.33. The figure was raised, so don’t follow old blogs.
  • Your own account, a sponsor (relatives up to the 4th degree, with ID, letter and income proof) or an education loan visible on the statement.
  • A DSU or university scholarship letter can cover this requirement.
Avoid sudden deposits. A large amount appearing just before your application, without a clear source, is one of the most common reasons officers question Indian files. Keep funds in the account steadily for the 6 months shown.

5Attestation and apostille, explained

Indian academic documents need to be legalised before Italy accepts them. The 2026 checklist is clear that SDM attestation is not accepted.

1. UniversityCollect original degree and transcripts.
2. State HEDAttestation by your State Higher Education Department.
3. MEA apostilleApostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (via authorised agencies).
4. DoV / CIMEADeclaration of Value or CIMEA statement, if your university needs it.

For 12th-class certificates (needed for Bachelor’s applicants), the state education board or HRD route applies. Ask your university which documents they want verified, because requirements differ between programmes.

The Bengaluru checklist sets 31 October 2027 as the last date for Bachelor’s and Master’s applications for 2027/28, but leaving it that late risks missing classes.
