Round 1, 2 or 3: which should you aim for?
Round 1
Earliest results, most places, and plenty of time for pre-enrolment, visa and DSU.
Round 2
The main round at many universities. Still safe, if you apply early in the window.
Round 3
Possible but tight. Visa slots fill up in summer, and some rounds exclude applicants abroad.
Our advice: apply in Round 1 at one or two universities and in Round 2 for the rest of your shortlist. Not sure how many to apply to? Read our step-by-step guide on how to study in Italy.

Your questions, answered
Which Italian universities are open for September 2027 applications now?
As of 12 October 2026, the University of Padua is open (Call One until 15 November 2026). Pavia opens on 12 November, Macerata in November and Messina on 1 December 2026. Many others, including Politecnico di Milano and Sapienza, usually open between October and December.
When do Italian universities open applications for 2027/28?
Most Italian public universities open applications for international students between September 2026 and February 2027, with several rounds that continue until spring 2027.
Is it too late to apply for the September 2027 intake in Italy?
No. October to March is the main application period for non-EU students. Applying in the first or second round leaves enough time for Universitaly pre-enrolment, the visa and the DSU scholarship.
Which round should non-EU students apply in?
The first round (October–December) is best for students who need a visa, because it leaves the most time for pre-enrolment, the visa appointment and DSU documents. The second round is still a safe option.
