The 16-year rule

Which Pakistani degrees are accepted for an MS in Italy?

Italy’s master’s degrees (laurea magistrale) are second-cycle degrees, so you need a full first-cycle degree first. For Pakistan, universities such as Trento list exactly which degrees count.

Your degreeYearsMS in Italy
BS / BSc (Hons)4Accepted
BE, MBBS, Pharm-D, DVM, 5-year LLB4–5Accepted
BA/BSc (2 years) + MA/MSc (2 years)2 + 2Accepted
BA/BSc (2 years) + LLB2 + 3Accepted

Still in final year? You can apply before graduating. Most universities give a conditional admission and ask for your final degree before enrolment (usually by autumn 2027).
Grades

What CGPA do you need?

Most Italian universities do not publish a single minimum CGPA. A committee reviews your transcript: the subjects you studied, your grades in the core courses and your final CGPA. As a guide from the profiles we evaluate:

CGPA (out of 4)What to expect
3.3 and aboveStrong. Competitive programmes (Politecnico di Milano, Bologna, Padua) and merit scholarships are realistic.
3.0 – 3.29Good chances at most public universities.
2.5 – 2.99Possible, especially at smaller universities and less competitive programmes. A strong motivation letter and CV matter.
Below 2.5Limited, but not impossible. Relevant work experience and a well-matched programme help.

FAQ

MS in Italy for Pakistani students: FAQ

Can I do an MS in Italy after a 14-year BA or BSc?

Not directly. Italian universities require 16 years of education for a master’s, so a 2-year BA/BSc must be followed by a 2-year MA/MSc or a BS completion. Otherwise you can apply for a 3-year Italian bachelor’s.

What CGPA do I need for an MS in Italy?

Most Italian universities do not publish a single minimum CGPA. They review your transcript, subjects and grades. In our experience a CGPA of 3.0/4 or higher gives good chances at most universities, while competitive programmes at Politecnico di Milano or Bologna expect stronger grades. Students between 2.5 and 3.0 still get admitted, especially at smaller universities.

How much does an MS in Italy cost for Pakistani students?

Tuition at public universities for Pakistani students with income abroad starts at about €300 a year (PKR 93,000) at Sapienza and €390 at Pavia. Living costs are around €550–1,100 a month depending on the city, and the visa requires proof of about €10,180 a year.

Can I study an MS in Italy without IELTS?

Yes. Many Italian universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your Pakistani university instead of IELTS. Some programmes and the visa interview may still need proof of English, so check each call.

Is HEC attestation required for Italy?

Yes. Italian universities ask for degrees and transcripts attested by HEC, and the embassy or CIMEA needs them for the Declaration of Value or statement of comparability.

Are there scholarships for an MS in Italy for Pakistani students?

Yes. The regional DSU scholarship can waive tuition and pay living costs, the Italian government MAECI scholarship paid €900 a month in 2026/27 for students under 28, and some universities offer merit scholarships.
