Took Cambridge or Edexcel A-levels in Pakistan, or studied for a UK degree at a local teaching centre? Here is exactly when a British degree in Italy is accepted, when it is not, and which documents Italian universities ask for in 2027.

Quick answerYes, Italy recognises British qualifications. Three passed A-levels give access to an Italian bachelor’s, and a UK bachelor’s with Honours gives access to an Italian master’s. O-levels alone, BTEC/HND, ordinary (non-Honours) degrees and some partner-taught UK degrees are where students get refused.

For bachelor’s

A-levels: the three-subject rule

Italy needs 12 years of schooling before university. The Ministry’s rules for international students say a General Certificate of Education (GCE or IGCE) gives access when it shows at least three A-level subjects passed, relevant to the course.

Rule 1

Three A-levels, passed

AS levels do not count as full A-levels. A mix of three subjects across A-levels and Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects is accepted.

Rule 2

Relevant subjects

Choose a course that matches your A-levels: Biology and Chemistry for Medicine, Maths and Physics for Engineering, and so on.

Rule 3

Italian doesn’t count for English courses

An A-level in Italian does not count towards the three subjects for programmes taught entirely in English.

Rule 4

Short? Top up

With one or two A-levels, a full foundation year or one university year with all first-year exams passed can fill the gap.

Pakistan tip: get your IBCC equivalence early. IBCC equates at least eight O-level subjects to SSC and three A-level subjects to HSSC, and Italian embassies and universities often ask for it with your Cambridge or Edexcel certificates. Many English-taught bachelor’s also ask for SAT, TOLC or an entrance test: see studying in Italy without IELTS for language options.
For master’s

UK degrees: Honours is the key word

A UK bachelor’s is a first-cycle degree in the Bologna system, so it gives access to an Italian master’s even after three years, but only the Honours degree. Luiss, for example, states that where both exist, only Honours bachelor’s degrees qualify for master’s entry.

England · Wales · NI

3-year BA/BSc (Hons)

Accepted for a laurea magistrale. Your transcript must show enough credits in the subjects the course asks for.

Scotland

4-year Honours degree

Accepted. A 3-year Scottish ordinary degree is usually not enough on its own.

Not degrees

HND, HNC, Foundation degree

These are below bachelor’s level and do not give access to an Italian master’s.

Studied in Pakistan?

UK-affiliated degrees taught in Pakistan

Thousands of Pakistani students earn UK degrees without leaving home: University of London programmes at recognised teaching centres, or degrees from UK universities delivered by a local partner college. Italian universities check these more carefully.

Professional or diploma programmes (HND, ACCA papers)Awarding body, not a universityNot a degree No direct master’s access
Italy’s recognition centre, CIMEA, has been cautious about franchised and validated UK programmes, because no national agency checks quality outside its own country. Several universities (for example Trento and Luiss) require that, when the teaching and awarding institutions differ, both are accredited in their own countries. Your degree should also be HEC-attested.

Documents

Documents to prepare

You upload these for university applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, then show originals at the visa appointment and on enrolment.

  • A-levels: final certificates for every subject (Cambridge or Edexcel), the statement of results, and O-level certificates.
  • IBCC equivalence certificates (Pakistan) for O-levels and A-levels.
  • UK degree: degree certificate, full transcript, and the Diploma Supplement or HEAR if your university issues one; HEC attestation if studied in Pakistan.
  • Value of the qualification: a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value from the Italian embassy. Many universities accept either.
  • Passport, CV, and an English certificate or MOI letter if the course asks for one.
Avoid these

Mistakes that get British qualifications rejected

  • Applying with O-levels or IGCSE only, or counting AS levels as full A-levels.
  • Choosing a course unrelated to your A-level subjects.
  • Using an ordinary (non-Honours) degree or an HND for a master’s application.
  • Applying with a franchised UK degree without first checking recognition with CIMEA.
  • Leaving IBCC, HEC and CIMEA steps until after admission: each can take weeks. Check 2027/28 university deadlines and work back from them.
FAQ

British degree in Italy: common questions

Is a British degree recognised in Italy?

Yes. Italy and the UK are both parties to the Lisbon Recognition Convention, and Italian universities assess UK qualifications every year. A UK Honours bachelor’s gives access to an Italian master’s, and three passed A-levels give access to a bachelor’s. Each university makes the final decision on your file.

How many A-levels do I need to study in Italy?

At least three passed A-levels, in subjects relevant to the course you choose. A mix of three subjects across A-levels and Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects is also accepted. For Scottish qualifications the rule is three Advanced Highers, or two Advanced Highers plus four Highers.

Are O-levels or IGCSEs enough for an Italian university?

No. O-levels, GCSEs and IGCSEs are not accepted for university entry in Italy. You need A-levels or a 12-year qualification such as the Pakistani HSSC.

Do I need IBCC equivalence for A-levels?

For Pakistani students it is strongly advised. IBCC issues HSSC equivalence for three A-level subjects (and SSC equivalence for at least eight O-level subjects), and Italian embassies and universities often ask for it alongside your Cambridge or Edexcel certificates.

Is a University of London degree from Pakistan accepted in Italy?

Usually yes, when the degree is awarded by the University of London and carries Honours, because it is the same UK degree. Partner-taught franchised or validated degrees are checked more strictly. A CIMEA statement of comparability is the safest way to confirm before you apply.

Do I need a Declaration of Value for a UK qualification?

Italian universities accept either a Declaration of Value from the Italian embassy or a CIMEA statement of comparability. For UK degrees, many universities also accept the transcript with a Diploma Supplement or HEAR. Check your university’s list of documents.

Can I apply with a 3-year UK bachelor’s?

Yes, if it is an Honours degree. A 3-year UK Honours bachelor’s is a full first-cycle degree in the Bologna system. This is different from 3-year Pakistani or Indian pass degrees, which usually need extra study before an Italian master’s.

Not sure if your British qualification is enough?

Send us your A-level results or UK transcript. We check them against Italian university rules, suggest courses that match your subjects, and plan your IBCC, HEC and CIMEA documents before the 2027/28 deadlines.
