What is an MOI letter, and what must it say?
An MOI (Medium of Instruction) letter is an official letter from your university confirming that your degree was taught in English. Italian universities accept it only if it is clear and complete. Ask your registrar for a letter on university letterhead, signed and stamped, that says:
The words “entire programme” matter. Some universities, such as Politecnico di Torino, also want the letter to come from an institution in an accepted country. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh are on PoliTo’s list.

Admission requirements: what Italian universities check
- A 4-year bachelor’s (16 years of education) in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Maths, Physics or Engineering. A 2-year BA/BSc is usually not enough.
- Enough maths and statistics credits. Many Data Science and AI programmes want 24–30 ECTS in maths, statistics or CS. Count calculus, linear algebra, discrete maths, probability and statistics on your transcript (1 Pakistani or Indian credit hour ≈ 1.5–2 ECTS).
- Good grades. Few programmes publish a fixed minimum CGPA, but grades are the main selection factor. Competitive programmes (PoliMi, Trento, Bicocca AI) favour roughly 3.3/4 and above, and Bicocca waives its AI interview at 3.55/4.
- A strong CV and statement of purpose. Projects, internships, research papers and work experience in data or AI count, especially at Pisa, Trento and Bologna.
- Verified documents. HEC (Pakistan), MEA/university (India) or Ministry of Education + e-Apostille (Bangladesh) attestation, then a CIMEA statement or a Declaration of Value for the visa.
Tuition, costs and DSU scholarship
| Item | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition at public universities | about €156 – €4,000 a year | Most link fees to family income (ISEE parificato) |
| DSU scholarship | free tuition + a yearly grant up to about €7,000 | Regional, based on family income and merit |
| Living costs | €600 – €1,100 a month | Milan is the most expensive; Calabria and Salerno are cheaper |
| Visa bank balance | €10,179.85 a year | About PKR 31.4 lakh, ₹10.8 lakh or BDT 14.1 lakh |
Bangladeshi students are on Italy’s 2026 list of particularly poor countries, so they usually pay lower fees and apply for DSU without an ISEE parificato. Pakistani and Indian students prepare the ISEE parificato documents. See the full cost of studying in Italy and our DSU scholarship guide.
