Italy has one DSU scholarship but around 20 different calls. Each region (and in Lombardy each university) sets its own deadline and income limits. This DSU scholarship by region guide puts every major call side by side, so you know where you qualify and when to apply.

Most international students are fuori sede (living away from the family home), which is the highest-paying category. Amounts below the headline are often reduced by meal and housing deductions.

Official site →How to be ready for the 2027/28 calls
The earliest 2026 deadline was 22 July, before many students even had an admission letter. Work backwards from that date.
Apply to universities and complete Universitaly pre-enrolment early. Pick at least one university in a region whose limits suit your family.
Collect family income, property and family-composition documents, then translate and legalise them. Our ISEE parificato documents guide lists what Pakistan, India and Bangladesh require.
Get your codice fiscale, watch for each bando, and book a CAF appointment for your ISEE parificato. Apply as soon as your region opens.
Submit before the deadline, upload or post foreign documents as the bando says, and apply for housing separately if needed (often an earlier deadline).
Check provisional and final rankings, fix any errors in the appeal window, and expect the first instalment by around 31 December.
Mistakes that cost students their DSU
- Applying in the wrong region. You apply where your university is, not where you will live. Rome means DiSCo Lazio; Milan means your own university.
- Missing the separate housing deadline. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, Milan and Venice, housing closed weeks before the scholarship.
- Forgetting the foreign documents step. ER.GO needs foreign income documents uploaded by the main deadline; DSU Toscana needs originals posted by registered mail.
- Ignoring the ISPE limit. A family with property can pass the ISEE limit and still fail the ISPE limit, especially in Veneto (€43,125.94).
- Not planning for merit. First-year students must pass a minimum number of credits (often by 10 August 2027) or repay or lose the second instalment.
DSU by region: common questions
Is the DSU scholarship the same in every Italian region?
No. The Ministry sets national maximum limits (ISEE €28,339.88 and ISPE €61,608.48 for 2026/27) and minimum amounts, but each region or university publishes its own bando with its own deadline, limits and rules. In 2026/27 deadlines ranged from 22 July (Lazio, Palermo) to 30 September (Milan universities, Padova).
Which region has the highest ISEE limit for DSU?
Lazio, Umbria and Friuli Venezia Giulia used the national maximum for 2026/27: ISEE €28,339.88 and ISPE €61,608.48. Tuscany followed with €27,000 and €60,000.
Which region gives the highest DSU scholarship amount?
In 2026/27 the Lombardy universities (UniMi, Bicocca, PoliMi) paid up to €8,248 a year to fuori sede students in the lowest ISEE band, including the value of free meals. ER.GO in Emilia-Romagna paid €8,246.78 to fuori sede students with an ISEE of €12,500 or less.
Can I still apply for DSU 2026/27 now?
For bachelor’s and master’s students the main 2026/27 calls have closed. PhD calls were still open in Piedmont (until 27 November 2026) and Tuscany (until 16 November 2026). Students starting in 2027 should prepare for the 2027/28 calls.
When will the DSU 2027/28 calls open?
The 2027/28 calls are not out yet. In 2026 most regions published their bando in June or July, with deadlines from late July to the end of September. Expect a similar pattern in 2027 and have your family documents ready by June.
Do I need my visa before applying for DSU?
Usually not. Most calls let international students apply before arrival. Some set a later deadline for the visa, for example Milano-Bicocca asked conditional winners to obtain the study visa by 30 January 2027. You do need an Italian codice fiscale to apply.
My family owns property. Which region is safest?
Look at the ISPE limit, which measures family assets. In 2026/27 Veneto (Padova) had the lowest ISPE limit at €43,125.94, while Lazio, Umbria and Friuli Venezia Giulia allowed up to €61,608.48.
